Esophageal Manometry

Esophageal Manometry

High-resolution esophageal manometry is a test that checks how well the esophagus works. The esophagus is the tube that carries food from your mouth to your stomach. During the test, a small, flexible tube with tiny sensors is gently put through your nose or mouth and into your esophagus. This tube measures how the muscles in your esophagus move and push food down. The test makes detailed maps of these movements, helping doctors understand how well your esophagus is working. This test does not require anesthesia. Esophageal manometry is important for finding and treating problems like achalasia (a condition where the esophagus has trouble moving food) and other problems of the esophagus.
